Once when I was being sedated for surgery and I was counting backwards, “99, 98, …” I felt this surge of irresistible calm sweep over me like a vast tide of night. While I floated away I felt myself become totally, completely relaxed. I realized in an instant that I had been unknowingly living my life in a state of being clenched. It was a blessed relief to feel all the tension completely give way to ultimate relaxation—maybe for the first time in my adult life.
In the days and weeks of recovery and rehabilitation that followed and the exigencies of getting back to work, I forgot that brief flash of self-awareness, but fortunately the memory returned one night just as I was falling asleep. With the awareness came this metaphor for the experience.
The vaquita, a small porpoise endemic to Mexico’s Gulf of California, is the world’s smallest and most endangered small marine cetacean. With fewer than 200 left, high levels of entanglement in fishing gear threaten imminent extinction if current trends continue.
Each year, anywhere between 40 and 80 vaquitas are killed in gillnets and trawl nets used in both artisanal and commercial fishing. At the same time, the habitat of the species has been altered by damming of the Colorado River in the US.

Previews: Kevin Peterson – “Remnants” @ Thinkspace
Tonight in Los Angeles, Kevin Peterson will be opening his second solo show (see 2012) with Thinkspace Gallery bringing with him a new body of work entitled Remnants. The Houston-based artist’s portraiture sets the innocence of his subjects and their animal companions against oftentimes desolate urban backgrounds. This contrasting overlap of two different worlds places his characters in a narrative where their courage and strength can shine through.
